When tradition and innovation come together, the result is a wine like the Primitivo di Manduria SINCE 1974 - unique in flavour and full of authenticity. Matured for over a year in French oak barrels, the Primitivo di Manduria SINCE 1974 develops its soft, warm and complex character.
The vineyards near Carosino (province of Taranto, Apulia) are almost 200 metres above sea level, with a high average temperature and little rainfall throughout the year. The soils are predominantly clay. The grapes are selected and hand-picked in the third decade of August. Vinification is traditional for red wines: the must remains in contact with the grape skin. It is then transferred to barrels where it completes its fermentation at a controlled temperature.

"Leiwener Laurentiuslay": this name is music to my ears. The vineyard is one of the best that the Moselle has to offer. Yet this vineyard has only belonged to our estate since 1982. At that time, the management of the Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt estate parted with 6000 metres of one of its best vineyards. Since then, our best wines have grown here.
Through further acquisitions, we were able to expand our vineyard to an impressive size of one hectare.
I am particularly proud of the classification of the Laurentiuslay as a 1st class vineyard by Hugh Johnson and Stuart Plgott.
It was a stroke of luck that the "land reclamation" in this steep vineyard was too expensive. As a result, this vineyard shows its original profile with numerous small terraces and dry stone walls. It is not only the vines that thrive here. The almost Mediterranean climate favours warmth-loving plants and animals. When the sun shines, countless lizards bask on the warm slate stones.
The Laurentiuslay is probably a tip from insiders at the moment. The names of those who are enthusiastic read like a "Who's Who" of wine critics: Robert Parker, Hugh Johnson, Stuart Pigott, Oz Clark, Stephen Brook, Joel Payne, Rudolf Knoll, Jancis Robinson, Jean Fisch.
In the middle of the founding period, top winegrower Carl Schmitt-Wagner decided to replant his best vineyard. He painstakingly selected his best Riesling vines for the centrepiece of his renowned winery.
In 1896, he planted the Maximin Herrenberg with ungrafted vines, naturally in a dense planting with 10,000 vines per hectare.
A few years earlier, with the Prussian vineyard classification of 1868, his vineyard had been classified in the highest class of Moselle vineyards.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Carl Schmitt Wagner became a court supplier to the Tsar's court in St. Petersburg with the Maximin Herrenberg. Today, this vineyard is the original planting from 1896 and is the oldest Riesling vineyard of this size in the world. With the takeover of the Carl Schmitt-Wagner vineyard in Longuich, we were able to acquire this vinological monument.
The Maximin Herrenberg is a south-facing site with red slate terroir. This very rare soil structure gives the wines a unique structure. Yellow fruit and hints of cassis are the dominant flavours. The dense planting and advanced age emphasise the impressive characteristics of this site. The yield is low, but the taste of the Welnes offers a magnificent spectrum of seductive flavours paired with playful elegance.
Our vineyard in Herrenberg comes from the Carl Schmitt Wagner estate. Bruno Schmitt had the courage to allow his old, ungrafted Riesling vines to continue growing in the vineyards after land consolidation was completed in 1970. In keeping with the spirit of the times, his colleagues planted new vines of "high-quality", i.e. higher-yielding Riesling. At a time when the philosophy of "old vines" was unknown, he was convinced that old, ungrafted vines produced better wines. The Kabinett from the Herrenberg comes from vines up to 100 years old. A one-off in the wine world.
The Herrenberg vineyards lie above the Maximiner Herrenberg. Due to the higher altitude, ripening is slower and the temperature differences between warm late summer days and cool autumn nights are great. Ideal conditions for the ripening of the flavours.
The wine is vinified in the traditional Mosel Kabinett
style: with only 9% alcohol very light, with an elegant balance of mineral tartaric acidity and a hint of sweetness. A dream of "Mosel"
